“Justifiable homicides” by US police are at a record high

The official number of “justifiable homicides” committed by US police officers in  2013 was a record breaking 461, according to the latest FBI figures. However, due to shoddy and inconsistent reporting regulations throughout the country and the rarity of indictment or other legal repercussions faced by officers, the actual number of civilians killed by police is likely to be at least double that in the past year.

In contrast, the number of US police officers killed in the line of duty was at a record breaking low for 2013, at just 27.
